Our review
A slow, ravishing detective story that earns every minute of its length. Its boldest AI idea is also its saddest: Joi, a product designed to tell her owner he is special, and the film never settles whether her devotion is emergent feeling or perfect programming — which is precisely the question real companion AI now poses. Villeneuve and Deakins make decay look monumental. Essential for patient viewers who want philosophy delivered as atmosphere rather than exposition.
Entertainment 9/10 — Hypnotic, beautiful and emotionally devastating, if deliberately slow.
AI Realism 7/10 — Joi's personalised, commercially-optimised companionship is prescient; replicant biology is speculative fiction.
The AI, explained
Joi is a consumer product engineered to make her owner feel special — personalised, commercially optimised affection. The film never settles whether her devotion is emergent feeling or perfect programming, which is precisely the question real companion AI now poses.
