Our review
Rain, smoke and neon have been copied ever since, but the melancholy underneath is harder to imitate. The replicants, built with four-year lives, ask the film's real question with their behaviour: what do created beings owe their makers, and what do makers owe them? Roy's final mercy lands harder than any speech about consciousness. Deckard's investigation can feel slow and distant, deliberately so. Watch it if you want the defining film about artificial people demanding time they were denied.
Entertainment 9/10 — Atmosphere, design and two career-best performances; pacing is contemplative, not propulsive.
AI Realism 6/10 — Replicants are grown biology, not software, but the treatment of memory, lifespan limits and machine personhood is philosophically serious.
The AI, explained
Replicants are grown, not programmed — but the question is pure AI ethics: beings built with a four-year lifespan, implanted memories and human feelings ask what they owe their makers, and what makers owe them. Personhood is tested by behaviour, not by origin.
