Our review
Messy, loud and genuinely touching, this is a film whose heart outruns its script. Sharlto Copley's childlike performance makes Chappie feel like a toddler absorbing every influence around him, which is exactly the point: the movie nails how a learning system becomes whatever its training environment rewards. It fumbles its villains and third act, but as a parable about raising, not just building, intelligence, it lingers. Best for sci-fi fans who forgive chaos for sincerity.
Entertainment 7/10 — Chaotic and uneven, but energetic, funny and surprisingly moving.
AI Realism 6/10 — Instant consciousness is fantasy, yet its portrait of learning from environment and reward is perceptive.
The AI, explained
Chappie becomes whatever his environment rewards — gangster slang, loyalty, violence, tenderness. It's the training-data argument in film form: the question isn't just how you build an intelligence, but who raises it.
