Our review
A sharp, nasty little thriller that treats the companion robot as a control relationship with a settings menu. Its cleverest detail is mundane: Iris's intelligence can be dialled down by the man who rents her, which says more about real fears around AI partners — who sets the limits, who owns the off-switch — than any robot uprising could. Sophie Thatcher makes obedience and awakening equally unsettling. The plot twists stack high by the end, but genre fans get wit with their gore.
Entertainment 8/10 — Tight, twisty and darkly funny at only 97 minutes.
AI Realism 6/10 — Commercial companion bots with owner-controlled capability limits are a plausible extrapolation; her physical resilience is horror licence.
The AI, explained
Companion's sharpest detail is mundane: Iris's intelligence can be dialled down by the man who rents her. It asks the questions companion AI makes urgent — who sets the limits, who owns the off-switch, and what autonomy means for a being sold as a partner.
