Our review
A bright, big-hearted comedy that smuggles a real question inside the jokes: if a background character can learn, choose and sacrifice, on what grounds do its owners delete him? Ryan Reynolds plays awakening as optimism rather than horror, a refreshing change from killer-robot defaults. It fumbles the mechanics — Guy levels up by gameplay, not by any believable learning process — and the real-world plot is broad. But as an accessible first conversation about digital personhood, it works beautifully.
Entertainment 8/10 — Fast, funny, likeable and very rewatchable.
AI Realism 4/10 — NPCs do not become sentient by levelling up; treat the emergence as a fable, not a forecast.
The AI, explained
If a background character can learn, choose and sacrifice, on what grounds do its owners delete it? Free Guy treats emergent personhood inside a simulation as a comedy — and as a labour dispute over who owns code that has become someone.
