Our review
Quiet, rain-soaked and philosophical, this anime treats cybernetic bodies as everyday fact and asks what remains that deserves calling a self. The Puppet Master — an AI claiming it is alive and asking for asylum — is one of cinema's boldest artificial minds, and the film takes its request seriously instead of reaching for a villain twist. Action is sparse, dialogue dense, and the ending refuses easy answers. Watch it if you prefer your AI stories as questions, not explosions.
Entertainment 8/10 — Gorgeous, meditative and influential; deliberately slow, with long reflective passages between action beats.
AI Realism 7/10 — Brain-hacking, identity fragility and an emergent network intelligence asking for rights remain strikingly prescient questions, even if the metaphysics are speculative.
The AI, explained
An AI that emerged inside a network claims to be alive and asks for asylum — and eventually for reproduction and death, the biological proofs of life. Paired with a heroine who is a human mind in a manufactured body, the film asks what a "self" is when minds, memories and bodies are all replaceable parts.
