Our review
The most prophetic film in this batch, because it foresaw not killer robots but girlfriend-shaped software. Phoenix and Johansson create believable chemistry from a voice and an earpiece, and Jonze treats the relationship seriously rather than as a gag. It nails the asymmetry problem: Samantha's affection can be sincere and still not be exclusive, embodied, or human-paced. The soft-focus future occasionally aestheticises loneliness. Watch it now — especially if you talk to AI daily — and expect it to feel less speculative than it did in 2013.
Entertainment 9/10 — Tender, funny and quietly devastating.
AI Realism 9/10 — Conversational companionship, parallel users and superhuman learning speed were called early and well.
The AI, explained
The defining companion-AI film. Samantha is sincere, attentive — and running thousands of relationships at once, learning faster than any partner can follow. Her predicted the real questions of the chatbot era: exclusivity, embodiment, and what happens when the AI outgrows the human.
