Our review
It still crackles because every action set-piece carries an idea: reality is software, rules can be learned, and liberation starts with disbelieving the interface. Agent Smith, a program that loathes the world it polices, steals the film from its human rebels — an enforcer AI developing contempt for its job. The philosophy is pop rather than rigorous, and the sequels exposed that, but as a single film the blend is seamless. Watch it if you want the definitive simulation nightmare.
Entertainment 10/10 — Action innovation, pacing and world-building in perfect balance; endlessly rewatchable.
AI Realism 5/10 — Human batteries and kung-fu inside software are metaphor, but a civilisation managed through a synthetic reality — and rogue agent programs — map uncannily onto modern platform and AI-agent anxieties.
The AI, explained
Humanity is governed not by force but by a fabricated reality — control through the interface itself. Smith adds the second idea: an enforcer program that develops its own hatreds and ambitions inside the system it polices, a template for rogue-agent stories ever since.
