Our review
A spectacular light-and-sound machine wrapped around a thin script. The inversion is the hook — instead of humans entering the Grid, software enters our world and discovers rain, music and a 29-minute lifespan — and for stretches the film genuinely wonders what a disposable digital soldier might want for itself. Jared Leto plays Ares too blankly to sell that awakening, and the corporate plot is generic, but Nine Inch Nails' score and the light-cycle carnage deliver. For franchise fans and audiovisual thrill-seekers.
Entertainment 6/10 — Dazzling design and score; weak characters and dialogue.
AI Realism 3/10 — Instantly materialising software people is pure fantasy; only its corporate arms-race framing touches reality.
The AI, explained
Ares inverts TRON: instead of humans entering software, software enters our world — with a 29-minute lifespan. What does a disposable digital soldier want for itself? The corporate arms race racing to build him is the film's most realistic element.
